Thank you for the comment. I think context really matters, in addition to intention. It’s important to assess what power dynamics are present when an opinion is shared and/or when there are attempts to persuade (these are two very different things).
It is unavoidable that people influence each other, and the harm comes in when we try to assert control or dominance or, to put another way, when we misuse our power or influence. As individuals we can choose to use our power responsibly, in ways that benefit many people collectively, including by sharing our own experiences. That is what I have tried to do here. If I was a person sharing these ideas in a context in which I had significant structural power, then I would be even more mindful about what I share, how I share, and even if I share at all.
To be clear, my intent with this article is to share my experiences in ways that might be helpful to others. I am not interested in convincing readers of any idea, I am interested in spurring awareness, thought and dialogue. So thanks again for the comment.
